Griffey Update: Hold That Latte
It looks like the Braves might be making a last minute play for Ken Griffey Jr. And according to the talk, he’s not necessarily opposed to the idea.
As for all that business with Seattle? Well, now the word from Griffey is that all of that was just a bunch of rumors. His dismissal of the discussions with Seattle serves as further confirmation that he’s intrigued by the Atlanta concept.
For Griffey, the advantages to signing with the Braves would be his relationship with their manager, Bobby Cox, and the fact that they train in Orlando. (He lives there for some perplexing reason.) The main disadvantage to signing with the Braves would be having to play for the Braves.
Leaving aside the Chowdas, it’s possible that the Braves are the most abominable team in all of baseball. This might not be entirely unrelated to the fact that they originated in Boston.
Ultimately, Griffey will and should do whatever he sees fit. But, still, I like him better in Seattle. For starters, signing with the Braves would mean sharing time in left field with Matt Diaz. I think Griffey makes more sense as a DH at this point. Not to mention the fact that Griffey to Seattle just makes for a nicer story. (From what I hear, that Mariners fan feels the same way.) Plus, I’d like to be wishing him well wherever he goes. An affiliation with the Braves makes that more of a challenge.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see how this all plays out. No matter where he goes, I’m just pulling for him to pass his physical. The years and that trunk have not been good to his various appendages.
