Good Luck With All That
He said it before, and he’ll say it again-Barry Bonds is the home run king, and there is nothing that can or should be done about it. Period.
Aaron’s statement comes on the heels of some ridiculous posturing from the Commissioner’s Office in response to the A-Rod issue. In addition to making noises about suspending A-Rod, Selig suggested the possibility of stripping Bonds of his home run title.
First of all, no one is ever going to take away Barry’s home run record. Why? For the very reason that Aaron suggests that no one should. Because that’s basically an invitation to explore the legitimacy of every record ever set in the history of the game.
Good luck with all that.
So, given the fact that it’s so clearly implausible, why even make the statement? You make the statement to make a statement. To show everyone how troubled you are about an issue that you never bothered to address when you had the chance by proposing to do something that you’re never going to do anyway. You make the statement because you think, for whatever reason, that people will respect you more if you say the kind of dumb stuff that people who call into sports talk radio shows say.
Sort of like that nonsense about suspending A-Rod.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I don’t think he would have earned it. It’s just that it’s never going to happen considering that there was no collective bargaining agreement on drug testing as of 2003. Not to mention the fact that those tests were meant to be confidential. Period. I mean, this isn’t Russia. And I’m assuming that at least one person who works at MLB has a law degree. So if something’s not within the realm of legal possibility, don’t even mention it.
Aaron is absolutely right. At this late date, we can’t cherry pick where records are concerned. And pretending that we can or we’re going to won’t absolve anyone of what’s been allowed to happen. What’s done is done.
So, seriously, MLB. Until someone from that office has a real proposal for how to deal with this issue going forward-as opposed to a fake one for how to address its existence in the past-don’t bother. If I want to hear people who sound like idiots on sports talk radio shows, I’ll listen to a sports talk radio show.
