Scott Boras And The Ramirez Kid
A couple weeks back, Manny Ramirez said that he was waiting for his pitch. I’m starting to wonder if he understands that he doesn’t actually get any pitches unless he’s playing baseball.
His agent, Scott Boras, aka Creature From the Black Lagoon, turned down an offer from the Dodgers. Again.
The most recent offer was for two years at $45 millions with a player opt-out clause for the second year. Boras’s beef? That $25 million dollars of the payment were going to be deferred and paid out for three years following the termination of the contract.
I’m no economist, but I’d say that $20 million over the next two years and $25 million over the following three is indisputably better than $0 million over any years. That’s his other offer.
Dodgers owner Frank McCourt said as much in a snippily worded mass e-mail with the subject, “Boras Rejects Dodgers Offer To Manny Ramirez.” He wrote, “When his agent finds those ‘serious offers’ from other clubs, we’ll be happy to restart negotiations.”
Note the ironic use of quotation marks when he says “serious offers.” That’s where he really packs the punch with his insult.

Manny and Boras are exciting-it’s like they’re a less attractive, less likable Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid type of pair. Rebels seeking adventure, driven to their eventual and inevitable downfall by their own hubris/stupidity. Sure, it’s unlikely that they’ll ever knock off a bank. But, still, I enjoy watching them try to navigate the system of free agency.
