Notes From The Underground
And by the underground, I obviously mean the Citi clubhouse.
I talked to David Wright about his recent slump today. I asked him if, in the middle of a rough patch, the thought ever crossed his mind that maybe he should have followed in the family tradition and been a cop. (His father Rhon is captain in the Norfolk police department.) I mean, lord knows that whenever I get a story idea rejected I think to myself, “Dag. I don’t need all this crapelbon. I should just move to the country and start an animal rescue.” I figured, who knows? Maybe it’s the same for ballplayers.
Apparently not.
Wright told me, “No, I could be working a nine to five or I could be doing something else that I don’t enjoy as much — that’s my thought process. I heard it very early on in my career. The worst day in a baseball field is better than the best day in any office. That’s kind of the approach to bring mentally. ”
That’s probably true now that google stopped giving out free food in bulk bins. But before that, it was definitely a little bit debatable.
He went on to say, “Anybody can go out there and play well and put a smile on their face when things are going well. And it’s a testament to work ethic and trying to stay mentally sharp when things aren’t going so well.”
In any event, it looks like Dee Dubs might be able to give his work ethic a break for a little while. You know, because he’s finally starting to do that thing where he just goes and and plays well and puts a smile on his face.
