The at-bat song.

It’s a loaded proposition. It tells the world who you are as a player, as a hitter, as a man. It’s a lot to take on.

If you play it right, and you’re good enough, your at-bat song has the potential to be nothing short of epic. Take Paul O’Neill: “Teenage Wasteland.” Totally epic. And most other players would be hard-pressed to pull it off.

Then there’s Mariano. His is not an at-bat song, of course. But if you love the Yanks and you hear “Enter Sandman” in any context, your automatic Pavlovian response is probably to feel comforted because you know Mo is on his way. And then you remember that you’re in a taxi. But, whatever. The point is that Metallica should send him a thank you note.

Then there are some less fortunate choices. Wilson Betemit — “Can’t Find a Better Man.” A-Roid — “This is Why I’m Hot”. For two consecutive seasons. Arrogance–it’s like humility, but the opposite.

No one is talking much about Robinson Cano these days. Between the A-Roid scandal, the new acquisitions, the surgeries, people just haven’t had time to focus on Operation Revamped Swing. So the question still remains: How effective was the Robbie Cano-Kevin Long winter of love in the Dominican Republic?

Despite the lack of early reports, something tells me that this is going to be a blowout year for Robbie. After his focused work this winter and all the bad press last year, I think that come Opening Day, he might just be ready to hit the ground running.

For the better part of the last two seasons, Cano used Flo Rida’s “Low” as his batting song.

Flo Rida – New Music – More Music Videos

A classic to be sure.

However, given the hope that this year is going to be dramatically different from last year, I think he should kick things off with a new at-bat song. It would be unwise for Robbie to move in a dramatically different direction. Because you really can’t go wrong with Flo Rida. So I propose “In The Ayer.” It’s like “Low,” but newer, fresher, a little more now. In honor of his revamped swing, which is hopefully newer, fresher, little more now.

Oh, hot damn.
